Discover the history of Survey of Pakistan

Beginnings

Established in 1767 under British rule as the Survey of India, After independence in 1947, Pakistan inherited part of this organization, which was developed into the Survey of Pakistan

The origin of national surveying and mapping in this region goes back to the Survey of India, established in the 18th century during British rule. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, there was an urgent need for an independent national organization to carry out mapping, land surveys, and geospatial services for the new state.

In 1947, the Surveyor General of Pakistan office was established and entrusted with the responsibility of:

  • Producing and maintaining topographic maps of the country
  • Supporting defense planning and operations
  • Assisting the government in development projects through reliable survey data

Initially, maps and records were inherited from the Survey of India, but these were limited in coverage and often outdated. Over time, Survey of Pakistan developed its own resources, expertise, and technologies to expand and modernize the mapping system.

Today and the future

Now, Survey of Pakistan is the national authority for mapping and geospatial data, providing accurate information for defense, development and public services. Using modern tools such as GIS, GNSS, satellite imagery and aerial photography, it supports infrastructure projects, urban planning, disaster management and essential services like Qibla direction, boundary demarcation and surveyor registration. Its continuously updated digital maps make it a key resource for planning and decision-making across the country.
The organization is moving toward a fully digital future with smart mapping, drones, AI and a National Spatial Data Infrastructure to unify geospatial information. These advancements will strengthen e-governance, support smart cities, improve sustainability and enhance public access to reliable data. With innovation and collaboration, Survey of Pakistan aims to remain the mapping authority of today while becoming a geospatial leader for tomorrow.
